MIAD Industrial Project

Planning
Inspiration For this project, my inspiration was my grandma, who had expressed her need of a cleaner house when guests are over. The goal was to create a sufficient way to contain and organize shoes while also keeping the house clean. Many times, when family visits the children often lose their shoes when they randomly take them off in the house with no where to put them. In further investigation I had understood that the solution should be a piece of furniture that could easily fit in with the rest of the decor within her living room. I decided to propose a chair, it's purpose to have the shoes fit in the section of wood under the cushion, for easy access and a suitable place to sit and put shoes on before leaving. My idea also included have the cushion being a little stiffer so that it would not be difficult for children or adults to stand up after putting on shoes. Once I mentioned this idea to my grandma she thought that it would work out well. I had started to think of different shapes and sizes and colors of chairs P.O.V We met... We learned... We could... For my project, I met with my grandma to learn that her task for me was to create a chair for her that would be able to hold and organize shoes that are brought into the house by family and guests. This would be most helpful due to the amount of grandchildren my grandma has because they always seem to lose one or two of their shoes around the house.
I could solve his problem by constructing her a chair that would be comfortable to sit in and easy to get out of, while also being able to store multiple pairs of shoes . |
The Sneaker Chair Photoshop & Print on Foam Core 76.2 cm x 50.8 cm November, 2019 The Sneaker Chair was inspired by my grandmother's need for a convenient organizer for shoes without the hassle of cleaning up. This will help with keeping the house organized but also provide another piece of furniture in her living room. Empathy Map

Experimentation
My process of experimentation mostly consisted of learning how to use tools on adobe Photoshop and Photopea. Photopea is a similar online editor to help me place and compose my sketches and ideas. Most of my time doing this project consisted of experimenting with all of the tools available on Photopea and how to successfully use them to arrange my project nicely. |
I had decided for my final design I would choose the chair in the lower left hand corner of the planning sketches. Numerous reasons had been brought to my attention and had affected my decision on which chair would be the most effective for the purpose of the project. I had ruled out the first initial sketch because it would be too high for children to sit on and the storage for the shoes would not be as easy to access. For the second sketch, the yellow chair on the upper right, I had ruled that one out because of the fact that it had no real storage place and the form of the chair would not be easy to sit or get up from the chair. I experimented with this sketch because I was trying to figure out what chair design would best fit my grandma's living room setup now. I also ruled out the last final sketch because I had realized that by the shape and design that I drew, the storage for the shoes would be very small and condensed. It also resembled a recliner chair which would not be easy to put shoes on while sitting on it. This then led me to my final decision. My third sketch had represented everything I wanted The Sneaker Chair to have such as spacious storage room, and an easy form so that children and adults could sit down or stand up. |
Process
1. The first step I took in order to conduct this project was to create the POV (point of view) of my grandma and what problem she wanted a solution for 2. I then created an empathy math to document the things I heard, saw, and felt while listening to the problem she was explaining to me 3. Next, I created a mind map to lay out all my ideas and made planning sketches in order to plan out what my final product would be 4. After I had completed my preparation, I had created a Photoshop document on Photopea, setting the width to 30 inches, the height to 20 inches, and the resolution to 170 pixels 5. I then open a file and created a second layer to my project 6. I used the rectangle select to copy and paste my images and sketches onto my print, also using the free transform tool I cropped and rotated my images and sketches to size them correctly 7. Then, saving my document as a jpeg and uploading it onto a flash drive I went into the process of putting the print on foam core 8. Using my flash drive, I followed the steps instructed on the printer and had my final copy 9. I then finally used adhesive spray to mount my print on the foam core |
Reflection
Critique
Overall, I am satisfied with how my presentation board turned out. However, I wish I would have made the sketches and the diagrams more precise and clear. Although I scanned my pictures before putting them on Photopea, I still did not like the way they transferred. If I were to do this project again I would work more on the neatness aspect of the board. Nonetheless, I am very pleased with the Photoshop skills I had learned while in the process of doing this project. I had been able to navigate the Photoshop tools and used them successfully. With the foam core however, I had not laid down my print correctly to it was not aligned exactly to the foam core. I had to trim off some of the excess paper.

ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
My grandma's need for a better organization product had caused the relationship between the problem and my artwork because it had influenced me to come up with a helpful solution while still being able to use my own creativity.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach of the author was to produce examples of furniture design in ways people can and observe the options of what a chair can be.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Some generalizations and conclusions that I have discovered about people while researching my inspiration is that people have their own specific tastes that come in many different varieties that cannot be generalized.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my research was to discover a problem to create a product that can improve a person's life or state of mind.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences that I made while doing my research was that designing chairs is not an easy task and a lot of thinking and planning has to go into it before any final decisions are made.
