Soul, Mind, and Body Acrylic Paint on Canvas Panels are 30.48 cm x 60.69 cm each December, 2019 Soul, Mind, and Body is a tryptic piece inspired by artists Mark Kazav and Roy Lichtenstein. These three paintings exemplify how women exhibit different personas that can change the environment around them, while also changing the person they are within themselves. |
Planning

I n s p i r a t i o n
Each of the canvases in my tryptic project was inspired by an individual artist. My first canvas was inspired my Mark Kazav's, Red Nude which influenced the "body" section of my tryptic piece. Mark Kazav is mostly known for his artwork but also has experience in being a musician and a singer. His artworks are mostly made with oil acrylic on canvas. He constantly vibrant color and bold images within his pieces to create his own personal style. Kazav's artwork is said to be a reflection of the fauvism movement, reflecting his philosophy on life and his personality. His works also mirror those of Matisse and Van Gogh. For the second movement, I had not chosen a specific artwork, however, I decided to follow the technique and style of the pop-art movement artist, Roy Lichtenstein. All of his artworks include variations of comic book style illustrations. His inspiration pieces are reflected in my second canvas which is the "mind" section of my tryptic project. Finally, the last artist I chose to motivate my decision for the last panel of my tryptic is Jose Roosevelt. Most of his art was inspired by Salvador Dali, described as fantasy art. His career started off with graphic novel illustrations, then eventually led him to his painting career. I have chosen his piece WOMAN as a reference point for my last panel which is essentially that panel that is the "soul" portion. His artwork is commonly made with oil paints and acrylic on canvas. I have chosen this artwork because I feel that the flower in the middle of the woman's body represents her soul and how her inner persona affects her outer appearance that is projected into the world.
P L A N N I N G S K E T C H E S For my first sketch, which would represent the "mind" part of my tryptic, had reflected the artwork of Roy Lichtenstein. I wanted to create the sketch/painting this way so that the hair of the woman could be big to where I could fill it with vibrant colors. I had chosen to draw flowers around her profile because flowers sometimes represent purity and loveliness, which I wanted to be a main theme in my piece. I wanted my tryptic to represent the auras and personas of women and how feminine beauty can consist of more than just stereotypical beauty or expectations. These things represent who I am and how the environment I am surrounded in affects me because of some of the inequalities forced onto women. I decided to use this as a final product for one of my canvases because it represented my thought process and could convey my message convenient. However, for my second sketch I held a similar idea from my first one. I did not end up choosing this sketch for the "mind" part because I ultimately liked the first sketch better because of the detail and color opportunities I would have while recreating the sketch on the canvas. I kept the same idea of having her hair spiraling and out of control, not having it tamed. My third sketch was made to represent the "body" portion of the three panels. I wanted to do a body portion in order to exemplify how the world sees women as objects and bases opinions on how much weight they have and critique each individual body shape which ends up objectifying women. |
Process
1. First, I started the project by making and stretching my canvases. I made a wooden frame using prefabricated pieces, then stretching canvas over the sides 2. While holding the canvas tight I stapled the canvas into place, also folding the corner pieces so there was no frayed edges 3. After stretching all three canvases, each one needed to primed with gesso, this primer make the canvas hold on tighter to the frame, making the painting process easier 4. After layering gesso onto the canvases, I then transferred my sketches onto the boards so I had an outline of where to paint 5. While in the painting process, I experimented with mixing a lot of different colors in order to get the right tones for my vision for the project 6. I mostly used my thinner tipped brush for the whole project, only using the flat, thicker brush for painting the background of each canvas |
Experimentation
Most of my experimentation was surrounded on the colors I wanted to use in my piece. I ended up with a wide range of colors. Most of the lighter hues ended up being on the middle canvas which was the "mind" part of the three canvases. Another part of my experimentation was how to link the three canvases together to tell a story. I had a rough time with this because I had a lot of ideas that I thought would connect better than they did. However, with my theme being what it is, it does connect in the sense of expressing the inner women and presenting an abstract way to look at things.

Reflection
C R I T I Q U E
I am somewhat satisfied with my tryptic piece. I feel that the theme could have connected more so that the story could be more easily understood. However, I do like the theme I chose of expressing the mind, soul, and body of a women in different aspects that lead people to think what the message is. I feel like I could have had better time management with this project so that the quality of the paintings would have turned out cleaner and more detailed. I wish I would have taken more time to thoroughly plan out the story of my tryptic, even though the final product somewhat satisfied what I wanted done for it. I could have added more ideas to some of the backgrounds to make the pieces more interesting to look at, however I wanted the main focus of the pieces to be the center of attention. That is why on the middle canvas I painted the background yellow instead of purple to make it stand out more. I also wish that I would have had more variety in the brushes that I had access to. This would be able to help me with smaller detailing.

Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork.
I am able to identify the cause and effect relationship between my inspiration and my artwork because I had connected my inspiration pieces in my artwork by mirroring some of the figures and techniques used by Roy Lichtenstein and Mark Kazav.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The overall approach the author had regarding the topic of my inspiration was the connection between the artists, movements, and my final product. It helped me decide on a theme choice.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Conclusions that I had made while researching my inspiration was that most of the public belittles women in some type of way. The female community has come long way from how bad the mistreatment was but there still needs to be improvement.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my inspiration research was to find certain artists that had techniques that I wanted to incorporate into my tryptic project. I also wanted to connect a movement to my piece.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
Some inferences that I made while reading my research was that the public still needs to come a long way before fully having both men and women on an equal pedestal.
